In 1975, the Leclerc family Domaine was divided between Philippe and René, each of whom went their own winemaking way: Philippe to 100% heavily toasted new oak and considerable fame or notoriety... and René to a more pragmatic and flexible approach. René’s wines are less marked by new oak than Philippe’s. The quality of the fruit is equally intense, rich and concentrated. The vines of the domaine, located on 29 acres, average 55 years in age and are all located in Gevrey Chambertin. In recent years, it has been René's son, François, who has been doing most of the winemaking.
The vinification is traditional for post-war Burgundy. The grapes are 100% de-stemmed and Leclerc does a moderate vatting of approximately 2 weeks. The must is not over-worked; the resulting wine is deeply colored but fine and long. It is a wine of finesse rather than power and is structured on its acidity rather than alcohol or tannin. It is the epitome of grace and elegance.
Gevrey-Chambertin: Premier Cru “Combe Aux Moines”: “Combe aux Moines” is one of the most famous premiers crus in Gevrey. “Combe aux Moines” means “valley of the monks.” The monks, here as elsewhere in Burgundy, were the ones who, after the Romans, planted vines as far back as the sixth and seventh centuries, and over time came to understand and to begin to rank the terroirs of these slopes. A combe is a small, usually narrow valley, almost a ravine, created by a stream.
“Combe aux Moines” is the highest of the great premiers crus on this slope, at 340-360 meters, and it is also on the steepest part of the slope. Its exposure is more directly to the east than the others, and this means that it gets somewhat more of the cool, early morning sun that is associated with the production of aromatics in the grape.
Lavaux Saint-Jacques: Like the Combe aux Moines, the stand-out premier cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques vines are all on a primarily southeast facing slope that lies northwest of the village of Gevrey.
Bourgogne rouge: Leclerc takes the beauty of the Cotes de Nuits Pinot Noir to make a luscious and ripe wine with great balance and elegance. This wine pairs well with roast beef, veal, or grilled salmon.
