Originally from Saint-Emilion, the Fourtout family has been making wine for 4 generations in Bergerac in the south of France. Combining passion, savoir-faire and a taste for innovation, David Fourtout is the present wine maker. The wine is aged in a cellar cut out of rock which actually goes across the river Verdots; this cellar is the result of a mammoth undertaking by David’s father, Jean-Guy Fourtout. Twenty-three hectares of the domain’s grapes (56% merlot, 16% cabernet sauvignon, 14% cabernet franc and 14% malbec) are planted in clay soil with superficial parent rock. Eleven hectares are planted in semillon (56%), sauvignon blanc (25%), muscadelle (11%) and sauvignon gris (8%); these grapes grow in a soil which is a combination of clay, limestone and silex.
The Clos des Verdots wines are all aged 18 months in vat. These are the oldest wines of the property.
The Clos des Verdots Bergerac Blanc sec comes from grapes grown in silty, sandy soil. An assemblage of 50% Semillon, 30% sauvignon blanc, 10% sauvignon gris and 10% muscadelle makes a very agreeable wine, intended to be drunk young. The mouth has depth and freshness and the nose is aromatic.
The Clos des Verdots Bergerac Rouge comes from grapes grown in clay-limestone silty soil conducive to red, structured wines. The assemblage is 80% Merlot and 20% cabernet franc. The dominate merlot in this wine gives it a velvety structure with a finesse of tannins. It has a pretty balance of power and elegance.
Clos des Verdots Bergerac Rosé is obtained by saignée. The assemblage is done with the cuvées of the fruitiest grapes, 50% cabernet franc and 50% malbec.
